THE LEGEND OF KANTAN ISLAND
Once upon a time in Labuhan Batu, North Sumatra, there lived an old widow with her son named Kantan. Her husband died when Kantan was still a baby. They live in a village, not far from the forest. They are poor.
One night, Kantan's mother had a dream. And the old man came to him, and asked him to go to the forest. Under a big tree, the old man asked him to dig a hole. He will find something very valuable. Kantan's mother knew it wasn't just a dream. So, he asked Kantan to go to the forest with him. When they found a big tree, Kantan dug a hole. Then, they found a box. When they opened it, they saw a golden staff. It's so beautiful.

"Mother, we have to sell this. We will be rich!" said Kantan.
"You're right! The golden wand is very beautiful. I'm sure someone will pay a lot of money. But who will buy this wand? All our neighbors are poor."
"Don't worry, ma'am. I will go to another island to sell it. I will find a very rich person to buy this golden stick, said Kantan.
Then, Kantan sailed the ocean to go to Malacca Island. Upon arrival, Kantan offered the stick to the traders. However, they couldn't pay for it. Kantan asks them to pay with lots of money.
The news spread very quickly. Everyone in Malacca knows that Kantan has a beautiful golden staff. The king also heard it. He asked his soldiers to take Kantan to his palace. The king wanted to see the stick.
"You're right. The stick is very beautiful," said the king, after Kantan showed him the stick. The king then continued, "I want to have this staff. But, I will not give you much money. You will marry my daughter. You can stay here in the palace and replace me someday," said the king.

Kantan, immediately agreed. Not long after that, they got married, and lived in the palace. Kantan was very happy, and began to forget his mother in the village. Meanwhile, Kantan's wife always asks about his mother. His wife really wanted to meet her mother-in-law. Kantan agrees. With a big ship, they sailed to Kantan's hometown.
When they arrived, all the villagers were surprised to see Kantan. He is a prince! They, then tell everyone about Kantan. Finally, Kantan's mother heard the news. His mother was very happy. Arriving at the ship, he immediately called Kantan.
"Kantan! Kantan! This is mother."
But, Kantan ignored his mother. He is ashamed of his mother. His mother was an old woman, and wore rags. When his wife asked, Kantan simply said that she was a mad woman, pretending to be his mother.
Kantan's mother was very sad. He prays to God. Suddenly, a huge storm attacked! Big waves swallowed Kantan's big ship. When the storm dissipated, slowly, an island appeared. Since then, people named the island as Kantan Island.
