One beautiful day, the mouse deer came out of the nest. He is very hungry. He wanted to go straight to the place where he usually looked for food. Unfortunately, there wasn't much food left. The available food could not fill his stomach. Finally he decided to explore elsewhere to find food and he arrived at the river bank.

Kancil saw a lot of food across the river, green grass grew, trees decorated with green leaves and ripe fruits. He was drooling, imagining how delicious the food across the river would be. However, he was confused as to how he could cross the river as there was no bridge connecting the two banks.

Then the mouse deer tried to enter the river, just in case the river was shallow enough that he could cross it without a bridge. Only one step of his feet touched the water when it was caught by the crocodile's jaws. Apparently the crocodile had been watching him until he was careless. The deer's situation was critical, his life would end with one move from the crocodile, his meat would become soft food for the crocodile.

"At first I wanted to find good food, but now it's become good food for crocodiles," thought the mouse deer.

However, the mouse deer is not an ordinary animal, its intelligence is as fast as its movement. This was not the first time he had been in a critical situation. Time and time again his life was saved by his intelligence. As his brain worked, he saw a group of alligators behind who caught him and they too were ready to munch on his meat. The many crocodiles did not frighten him. Instead, it became an opportunity for him to escape death. Then the mouse deer started to play his wits.

“Good-natured crocodile, you should know that I am here voluntarily. I feel that I have lived in this world for a long time, and now I have decided to end my life. I also decided to share my flesh and my whole body with the crocodiles that inhabit this river. But I made a condition that my meat should be distributed fairly and equally among all the crocodiles here. Agreed?"

All the crocodiles were stunned for a moment, they were astonished by what the mouse deer said.

"All right, mouse deer. If we agree with what you say, how are we going to do it?

“Hmm… the trap is starting to work,” thought the mouse deer.

“First, I have to count how many crocodiles inhabit this river. If I already knew the amount, I would be able to determine how much meat I had for each one. Therefore, all of them need not fight each other. ”

The crocodiles seemed to be more interested in the mouse deer's explanation because they saw the profit in front of them. As if fascinated by the mouse deer, the crocodiles positioned themselves from one bank of the river to the other. Then, the mouse deer carried out his clever plan. Stepping on every crocodile that made a line on the surface of the river, he started counting,

“One…two…three…” and finally it came to the last crocodile…”Goodbye…” and he quickly jumped to the bank and ran into the thick green bushes leaving the crocodiles stunned, realizing their folly.
